Pale blue clematis

REMF33REMF33 Posts: 731
Sorry this may be a needle in haystack job, but my 92 year old mother is obsessing about a sky blue (as in Himalayan blue poppy) clematis that she saw on tv (BBC) in the last week or two. I said I would ask if anyone on here saw it and if so has any idea what it might be. (I know, it's a bit like going into a bookshop and asking for that new book with a pink cover...)

Do you know if it was one of  the Chelsea programmes, or Garden Rescue perhaps?
I think Gardeners World had a piece about clematis a couple of weeks back, or more recently 😳. Have a look here, about 23 minutes in.

I'm not sure there are any the same colour as those Meconopsis, but some blues are probably quite bright, depending on the light on a TV screen.
Try having a look on Taylor's Clematis, Thorncroft or Hawthornes  and see if there's anything remotely similar. If she can even narrow it down to the shape of flower that might help. Some of the early ones have drooping, flowers as opposed to the big ones we tend to think of, and there also doubles etc.
You can probably get some of the programmes @AnniD mentions on iPlayer and you might be able to narrow it down that way too.
Is she absolutely sure it was a clematis too?  ;)

That's lovely. She thinks she saw one that's a 'proper' (non-lilac) blue though. It's tricky. She's several hundred miles away and I can't get inside her head, plus when one looks on the internet (or even tv), one can't always be sure that the colours are true...  I may have to watch all those Chelsea sub programmes on iPlayer... :open_mouth: (I do like watching gardening programmes but only so many at a time!) But of course she may have seen it elsewhere. Her memory is truly terrible, and getting worse, poor thing :(
Gardening was one of the most important things to her, but she can't even get out of the house now as her legs aren't strong enough to walk.

Meconopsis are quite  different in colour to the blues that clematis normally are, so maybe it was just one of the lighter blues.
The flowers can change with sun and shade, and as flowers mature too, which makes it harder.
Not an easy problem for you to solve @REMF33. I wonder if you could just pick a few nice ones, and somehow send her those photos  - maybe she'd just say 'oh yes, that's the one' .
Does she have internet though, or a phone?

Ah FairyGirl very needle in haystacky. While she forgets things, she doesn't usually get things wrong, but I can't be sure. Yesterday she told me she'd never used the internet. She was using it on her iPad until a year ago. I am not sure that this is going to play out well in the grander scheme of things... it would no doubt perk her up if I could visit, but it's just not possible when she's so far away, and when I do, will not be able to go in the house from our perspective as husband (the driver) is vulnerable and she has up to 6 different carers (no masks) going in a day.
I have been watching GW and don't remember it being on there. At least she doesn't think she saw it on the shopping channel... but it might be worth my checking out YouGarden (who I htink supply them) just in case (in which case she can't have one!)

Good luck with it. Almost impossible really!
Nice that you're making such a big effort though  :)

Yes - but neither of those are the colour of Meconopsis  :)
