Should I dig up concrete for climber?!

Hello wise gardeners,
I want to plant a climber outside my front door which is almost always in shade.
I've had no luck with potted clematis and my potted jasmine has just been got by mould.....so onto a climbing hydrangea!
Do I have to dig up the concrete or will it be okay in a large planter?
Upon first investigation, soil under conrete doesn't look of good quality.
Any help and advice would be much appreciated! Thank you
(Excuse the foot in th photo!)

Nope. They won't tolerate a planter, even less than clematis will. They need loads of good space for their roots.
Having said that - there are loads of clematis which are fine in pots.

Take a look at the specialist growers - Taylor's Clematis, Thorncroft and Hawthornes.
There are loads of choices available for shade and pots  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Looks like I'll be digging up concrete this weekend! 😁

    It's good exercise  ;)
Just make sure you can beef up all the soil though. It'll be very poor underneath.  :)
