Animals digging. Blackbirds in my garden are dreadful at throwing mulch all over the place.  The fox has dug up a few bean plants and some onions have been yanked out of the soil.

Hi Mary, I have this sometimes as well. I wonder if it’s just where the plant could have done with being planted maybe a little bit lower (I seem to have made this mistake recently!). Is the plant or plants looking unhealthy in any way? If you’re worried at all you can always put a little bit of soil over the roots.

Some plants, including shrubs, do have roots only just below the surface of the soil and don't need to be any deeper. Just pop on a light mulch if you are concerned.
  • I think I may have planted some too shallow, but others have been there a while. I am wondering if it the roots of a bay tree pushing them up?

Could it be that zealous watering has washed some of the soil away?
