Topping off a conifer

The tree in the centre of this photo is a dwarf conifer my wife brought home about 10 years ago. The ground level at the base of the trunk is about 1.5m below the decking 
It does serve as a very effective wind break though so it can stay for now. I'd like to stop it growing much higher though but I'm worried it will look terrible if I just chop the top off. Any tips to do tame this monster before it gets taller than the house?
