What to do with this please

My son has what I think is a cordyline. He’s asked me what to do with the brown / dead growth. Can he just cut it off or should he leave it? Thankyou

Just cut it off. Normal growth habit

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
