    How old is the tree?
Are you in an area that has had very little rain and cold NE winds?

only a young tree  put in in two years ago, as above wet winter  strong NE wind now baking hot, have cut back loosened ground outer perimeter of roots and lightly mulched.

Our walnut has been in for 5 years and this year it was hit 4 times by frost and the leaves very badly damaged.
It came back but for the first 2 years in the ground it was watered on a regular basis until it was settled and established.
The mulch will certainly help but give it a bucket of water maybe ever other day (I assume it is in the ground)

Yes it is in the ground, that gives me hope it was doing so well, thought it might have had an awful disease,  thanks will let you no progress
