Monterey Cypress Goldcrest tree shape

Hello
I'm new to this forum and am looking for some advice on Monterey Cypress Goldcrest trees. The ones I have don't have a conical shape and the branches are straggly and sparse. I've attached a picture of one of them. Is there anything I can do about them or do I just have to give them time to grow?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Many Thanks

It's not a great specimen. They should be tight and solid in their habit.
It would need some careful trimming regularly, without cutting back hard.
I'm not even sure it's as described. Have you tried crushing the foliage - it should have a distinctive lemony smell?
    Where did you buy it?

  • Hi Fairygirl

Thank you for your reply. I bought them online from a website which on the whole had good reviews. The foliage does have the distinctive lemony scent when crushed, but like you say, they aren't very good specimens, they do not look like the dense cone shaped ones advertised on the website. I'll probably have to wait for them to grow a bit before attempting to trim them into shape as best I can.

    Many thanks again!

They just don't look like they should.
I'd be inclined to do a tiny little bit of trimming now, then let them grow again to see how they shape up. They should certainly be that nice regular shape  :)
Might also be worth contacting the seller and saying you're not terribly happy. You might get a refund or a partial one  :)
I was concerned that they might be the golden variety of Leylandii  :/

  • Thank you Fairygirl, I'll contact the seller but I've got a feeling they won't do much, especially since I've potted them already (lesson learned, I won't be ordering plants online again!). They do look very similar to the golden Leylandii but I think they must be Monterey Cypress trees because of the smell of the foliage. I'll give them a very careful trim as you say and see how it goes!
Thanks again, really appreciate your advice 🙂

There are lots of good online suppliers of hedging, but it can be difficult if you don't know where to look.
Hopefully you'll get somewhere though  :)
