Can anyone advise how to save my grass?

If you have a dog and children, then a lawn is always going to get a bit ragged. it would look better and not so 'tufty' with a regular mow and you could try putting a couple of stepping stones sunk in the bare bits where the kid(s) regularly walk/run. In the autumn you could try over-seeding the bare patches with lawn seed but you would then need to keep pets/kids off that area for 6 weeks.
