Growing veg

Hi, We’ve bought a 300 litre, 180 cm long rectangular wooden trough which we will use to grow vegetables. Is it good practice to put a plastic liner in, or is it fine without (the wood has a 15yr rot treatment so may be it’s ok without). Some articles suggest filling just with multi purpose grow your own veg and fruit enriched compost (like Levingtons) and others say a mix of top soil and compost. I’m after best practice on this if anyone can help please. Thanks

The wood will last longer if you line it.  Heavy duty plastic bags are fine.  Don't forget to make some drainage holes.

I agree with josusa47, I would always line any wooden container. Depending on what type of veg you are growing a good mix of garden soil, home compost if you have it and bought compost is a good start.

You don't say how deep the trough is, if it is deep enough I would chuck some 'stuff' in the bottom before you start to fill with dirt.  Shredded paper, grass clippings. torn up cardboard, raw kitchen veg waste anything like that.

Hope you have a wonderfully productive veg trough  :)

Thanks a lot. The trough is 50cm deep.
