I’ve always cut Johnson’s Blue hard back after flowering ... right to the crown ... fed and watered ... this usually resulted in a good second flush of blooms and certainly a much less straggly plant.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

Hope it works for you. I’ve always done it with most hardy geraniums and at worst it freshens up the foliage and gives the snails that were hiding under there a bit of a shock  😊

    That’ll be worth it alone @Dovefromabove 😀

I like Johnson's blue. Doesn't spread too much for me. Flowers for most of June, cut back and then has a 2nd flush. I find it quite neat looking compared to Rozanne and easy to propagate by division.

How long does the initial flowering last? Into July?

Wow - flowering through June doesn't sound very long. My rozanne goes from May to the frosts.

That’s one of the reasons Rozanne won the RHS medal. Before its introduction no one expected hardy geraniums to flower for very long ... that’s why we cut them back in the hope of a second flush if the season was kind ... but I suppose that’s ‘old school’ 😂

Thanks @DovefromaboveI have just bought a few Purple Ghost at a nursery. The label says it can flower all summer long - until Oct. It will be interesting to see how it fares.
