My mother has 2 ducks, ?? Running Ducks,  I think they were called, they were tall skinny creatures, they only ever ate her lettuce.  They were great at keeping the slugs under control ........didnt do any damage to the ground

  • Have you a picture of your cage/ run?
    Yes, here it is

  • I haven’t built the coop yet...or the chickens for that matter. Complete beginner
  • @The_herpetologist If that is chicken wire it won't keep foxes out. You need preferably 0.5" galvanished iron mesh either sunk into the ground or with skirts. Or electric fence. The main point chicken wire isn't strong enough, I don't know why its called chicken wire!

That look good one of those brought frames, I have looked at getting one of those but know the area I have is not sheltered for cover even though I know they are tougher than tarpaulin covers.
So far I brought for mine was a chicken house and run then extra wire pannel frames for extra run and thinking of getting a proper roof as with just my heavy netting ontop got really muddy in winter was horrible especially as winter was really wet this last year, I did put turf in one side and that got destroyed quick

I know someone who has a frame like that at allotment and they have one of those covers to go on it so chickens can have some shade too - they like perches so tree stumps old strong branches even old wooden ladders are good
Like @mandyroberts99 said get wire put around under if you have not already, I put some paving around mine chicken run as well as wire - picked up free paving slabs from gumtree

I do have a good load of compost building up from my girls I got them last year in September first time chicken owner for me - so get some good compost bins made up or brought, I have ones made out of pallets and lined with weed matting, I use a white paint pot bucket and scoop for the poop easy to clean then put in compost bin to empty as they got older to egg laying their morning poop got bigger that was a surprise that is the biggest poop of the day
Bedding I use is bedsoft original which has a nice lemon smell to it for the coop and internal run

Are you building a coop or going to buy one?

I bought one. Looks great, but having built it, I’m not sure it’s going to be robust enough...we’ll see. The area gets a lot of protection from two big conifer trees, so rarely gets wet. It was a nightmare planting there as nothing would grow. I suppose I’ll save on tarp sheets....that coop is gonna be bone dry.

The only thing that reliably keeps foxes out is electric fencing.
Trust me - that's straight from the mouths of poultry breeders and exhibitors
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

well chicken wire can stop my 50Kg Dog from escaping, no idea how a 10Kg Fox would destroy it. They can squeeze underneath but if secured at bottom chicken wire should be fine? I mean I have lost too many chickens to Foxes over the years so I am no good example but I have seen a chicken video with thousands in Fox infested areas protected only by chicken wire, secured well (ideally with a wooden beam running along the ground) and the guy said in 40 years he only had an issue with a Fox once when the bottom was not secured well enough.

Just going by your name but also be aware Chickens are on a par with Pheasants with reference to Reptiles. If it's small enough they'll eat it but whatever the size they will try and kill it.
