VegTrug - Planting ideas

Hello,

I'm thinking about buying a medium vegtrug, it will have to be positioned at the side of the house, with partial shade (sun usually in the morning but shade in the afternoon).   I'm looking for some help/ideas for planting combinations.
Any ideas of what seeds / plants I could sow in early June?  I used to grow tomatoes, corquettes, lettuces, mushrooms (indoors), Pots and rhubarb but its been many years, so any help would be much welcomed!

I was also thinking of buying a small Vegtrug for the decking area at the front of the house, it gets a lot of sun out the front, so was thing strawberries and herbs.   Not sure if its too late to plant strawberries?
I've not had much luck growing herbs in the past (it has been a while to be fair) so any hints on combinations would be helpful.

Thanks very much - L

Hi there Wildflower145 and welcome. I am a very amateur gardener but until the more experienced offer suggestions how about Spring onions, salad leaves, beetroot, patio tomatoes, chives, parsley, peas or chard?

The salad leaves, spring onions, chives and parsley won't mind some shade and the chard would probably be OK too.  You need warmth for the tomatoes and strawberries and it is too late for seed now but a couple of patio tomato plants will still give you a crop. You might get some fruit from strawberry plants but if not there will be runners to grow on and a harvest next year.

What do you like to grow?

Chard, beetroot, salad leaves could all be planted in the summer, probably spring onions too. Or strawberries, herbs

Last year I used square foot gardening method with my trug. I had broad bean x4, spring onions x16, strawberries x2, tomatoes x2. These all seemed to do well in my 6 square foot trug in part shade but would require so much watering. I would get sun for 4 hours in the morning and 1-2 late evening.

This year I have 6 strawberries and herbs growing between.
  • thanks so much for everyones advice, really appreciate it!!

I think I'm going to go ahead and give it a go - try some chard, beans, peas and spring onions. Then strawberry plants, parsley and chives in the smaller vegtrug.  Perhaps some rosemary too as we eat a lot of lamb :-)  I'll pop back and let you know how I get along.
