Top heavy acer

My acer which is around 20/25 years old has leaf mainly  in the canopy. It’s around 20ft high.  With the high winds we’ve been getting in the summer the tree has lost 4 significant sized branches. Can I prune it  by around 50% and would this encourage new growth lower down instead of being mostly at the top 25% of the tree.

    If it's a Japanese Acer, you have to wait for it to be dormant to do any pruning as it will bleed badly right now. Can you add some photos to get better quality advice?
