Just an aside:  we enjoy watching crime drama, and can't help wondering why so many fictional murderers choose to bury their victims in woodlands.  With just a spade.  In reality, they'd need a mattock, axe, loppers, saw, whetstone and about 48 hours.

As @Mary370 says you can plant - you may have to re-jig positions slightly to find a space between roots and planting smaller specimens helps. Some of the roots may well be from trees that have been removed so they will rot down over time. Also remember to give any plants some tlc when first in as they will need help to get established - a bit of bonemeal on planting and a good soaking. You may also need to water them in periods of dry weather (whatever the time of year) at first as they will be competing against the trees. Just keep an eye out and if they are drooping or looking dull give them a can full - don’t water regularly unless needed as then they will become dependant on you rather than looking for water themselves.
