Identification please

This climber/shrub is in a narrow border climbing up a 6ft fence which separate our garden from the neighbour. Each year we fight to keep it under control. So far even with hacking it back it survives and thrives. Any idea what it is? If we wanted to remove it from the border is it a deep rooted thing? It runs along a garden path to the shed and towers over the fences and us.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Agree with B3, Solanum Crispum ‘Glasnevin’, Potato Vine. Very vigorous. It’s a climbing shrub. The more you prune it the faster it grows.

If you need to remove it you may need to dig deep and get down into the roots. The older they are the thicker the trunk and roots. But, not considered too deep rooted.
  • Many thanks everyone. Appreciate the identification - a friend had suggested 'Potato Vine' but I couldn't find it anywhere. I think it may have to go ! as you say,'Borderline' the more we chop it the faster it grows. We are OAP and although active, it is taking too much energy and effort to control it. Can't get down the path for the over-growth.

  • Thanks for help and advice. Think we will be 'disposing' of it some time soon.
    Can't cope !
