Escallonia propogation - mixed results

Hello all
Around three weeks ago I took softwood cuttings from an escallonia I inherited when I bought the house. The plan is to use around 100 of the best of 120 cuttings to grow a hedge around the property.

As you can see from the picture I am having mixed results, only two trays of five pictured but it’s a good representation. Some are coming along fine, others turned black and started sprouting new growth, some died completely and others looked dead only to revive themselves.

I am keeping them out of harsh sunlight, giving a mild food solution and keeping the soil moist. Is there anything else I should be doing? Or any good tips for propagating in general I could follow?

thanks, David

I had an escallonia hedge, I got rid of it because I wanted the space for something else.  It had no difficulty propagating itself:  every year I had to pull hundreds of its offspring out of the block paving.  Maybe seed rather than cuttings is the way to go?
