Wisteria Brachybotrys 'Showa Beni' not flowering

Our wisteria is about 8 years old.  It was quite large when we bought it and had several lovely pink flowers on it.  The following year it had one flower but since then it has not flowered at all. We have pruned it twice a year, as recommended, but still no flowers, although it does look very healthy and has plenty of foliage.  So far, it has no signs of flowering this year either.  Can you give any advice on this please.

  • I have read that this particular type of wisteria can take 10 years to mature and wonder if this is the problem.  It seems very healthy and produces plenty of foliage.  It is on a south-facing wall and planted in chalky soil.  It has all the required pruning, but still no flowers.

As it has already flowered before it clearly has the general idea.   Maybe it needs some potassium to encourage flower bud production.  Try giving it a feed of slow release rose or tomato fertiliser now, and again next spring.

  • Thanks for the advice.  We have already given it some tomato fertiliser earlier this year and hoped that would do the trick.  Obviously it needs more!
