What is the problem with my foxglove?

Does anyone know what's up with these foxgloves? I sow these from seeds last year, from a normal looking foxgloves.
New hybrid? Diseased and mutated?

Keen to know what's going on!

My first thought was a type of fasciation, but possibly a type of genetic mutation?

We saw several reports of similar split blooms on here last year. I’ve a feeling it’s some sort of unstable mutation ... does anyone else recall anything?

Hi @AnniD 😊. No not that one ... the one I’m thinking of had split ‘tubes’ ... almost frilly.
That being said, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen seeds for similar ‘split flowers’ on sale in the GC

  • Thanks for the responses. I have a feeling it's most likely a mutation, as doesn't quite look like fasciation.

Split petals aren't that common, but from my research it seems the most common is digitalis 'serendipity' bred a few years back

I found a similar post deep in the web....

The poster stated her's did not seed.

Possibly sterile due to mutation or the shape of the petals did not attract pollinators.

Would be interesting to see whether mine would set seeds!

Looks cool. The one on the Lizzy CJ thread looks like it was spliced with a sunflower and fed steroids.

I think it looks great and I hope it seeds for you. If you didn't know it was a foxglove, it wouldn't be out of place in a tropical garden.

Not the sharpest photo, but one of my foxgloves at the allotment looks at this early stage like the Lizzy CJ foxglove. Excellent 😀
