Staking a small lollipop tree

Hi all, (very new to gardening) I have just bought a small lollipop tree and planted it in a raised bed but I'm not sure if I should put a stake in it or not? Where I live we do get quite strong winds so I'm worried about it, have attached a picture, it is roughly 80cm tall thank you 😊

Wind's a terrible wrecker - don't we know it - so, if you're anxious, staking it will calm your nerves and be a good insurance.  A broad band of something should be used, rather than string, and seat belts cut out of scrap cars are excellent, free and long lasting.

In the absence of an old seatbelt at this time of lockdown, you can watch Alan Titchmarsh show you what he does with a pair of tights .... and he tells you how to stake a tree as well 😉

    That made me chuckle.

  • 🤣🤣 thank you very much everyone 😊 I really like it and want it to do well. Couldn't sleep last night worrying about it as it was still windy. Now to send the hubbie out in the garden with tights.......

..... but, in his defence, he might prefer a length of seatbelt.  Another genuine suggestion is the loops one finds on big white bags, used for delivering sand and ballast to building sites.  They're the last part of the bags to give way, and gently cutting the stitching of a discarded one will provide quite a bit of strapping material.  As with most such salvaging ideas, it's a question of grabbing them when available because they're never there when you need them otherwise.

only needs a short cane , don't tie it tight , you don't want the cane to support it totally so it will develop strong roots and eventually support itself , ive found overkill with stakes wont help the plant in the long run , hope this helps .
  • Thank you for your replies it's hard starting out and not knowing anything! Much appreciated 😊
