sleeper retaining wall/bed

hi

we are just starting our garden, and plan to clear the whole thing. the garage base is being taken away next week.

I plan on leveling from back to front.
The back of the garden slopes gradually from left to right (incline). i want to bring it all to the same level as the left side of the garden, so I am planning on dragging all of the incline mud at the back right, down to where the garage base is and then adding the necessary additional amount of soil to level it. the question i have is as I drag the mud to level it out, i assume I will need some retaining wall at the back that extends the width of the garden to retain the soil behind it?
i then plan on turfing the whole thing.

thanks for any advice in advance

I'm not sure why you would want to level it. It doesn't look a steep slope from the photo. Believe me, it will be an awful lot of hard work and you will wish you'd never started it. My advice is don't bother, learn to live with it. You shouldn't need to re-turf either, regular mowing should soon sort your lawn out

  • hi thanks for your reply. once the concrete slab comes up i would have to blend the top right of the garden in with the lower level, the height from the level of the concrete slab to the grass at the top right is 1.4ft. so i would need to create a slope then wouldn't I?

i'm thinking dragging it all forward would be easier. and bring it to the same level as the left hand side.
also if I don't re-turf the left hand side, then when i put turf on the right side of the garden, it'll look odd? also, will it ever look the same, or constantly patchy?

    thanks

We got ours levelled last year and created the bed at the back with a sleeper wall. We got someone in to do it with a digger, which made life a lot easier, though we had to returf the lot after the digger had been backwards and forwards over it a lot of times. Very pleased we did it, though not so pleased that my husband and sons are finding the level grass great for playing cricket on during lockdown.  Neighbours must be getting fed up of hearing me shout everytime the ball breaks another stem off my plants 😡
