Alliums advice:

ElothirElothir Posts: 94
Hello,

I've been wondering for awhile about trying some Alliums (something we've never grown). However quite often they (as well as Ipheions) come with comments suggesting they're a nuisance that spread all over.

Now I suspect that there is an element of one persons 'gentle spreading' being anothers 'rampant menace', the fact that plants behave differently depending on specific local conditions, as well as confusion between ones that aren't too bad and ones that are genuinely invasive.

So, I wanted to ask, what Alliums (or indeed other bulbs) would people recommend as 'well behaved' generally, and what ones should be avoided at all cost?

I wouldn't say Alliums are invasive.  As soon as the flowers start to die back you can simply snip off the flower stem to prevent seeding.  Even if they do seed, they are bulbs, so you can either dig them out where you don't want them, or keep stripping the foliage to starve the bulb of energy.  You can do this for all bulbs, either dig them out or starve them of energy.

There are some Alliums which can become a nuisance. A. moly, A.triquetrum to name but two. However the big ones are much better behaved.
