Extreme Tree Pruning

I need to remove one half of my Acer where it forks. Both branches are  8cm or 3 inches in diameter. This is virtually cutting the tree in half.  What do you recommend I seal the wound with and am I likely to loose it.

Current thinking is that you don't seal wounds.
Cutting half the tree off, will almost certainly kill it.

You certainly wouldn't do it just now, if it's an Acer.
I'd agree with @punkdoc - it's highly unlikely to survive.

I cut Eucalyptus gunnii down to the ground every other year and it copes fine, producing a lovely multi stemmed shrub, but Acers are different.

Personally I cannot see why you cannot take the whole branch off. There looks to be plenty of tree left.
Alternatively could the branch be taken off further up where it forks out again?

Thanks guys for your help, it was my intention to remove the left hand branch just above the first fork but as this is likely to kill the tree how about if I take off the two branches higher up on the second fork do you think I might get away with that?

I'm not at all clear whey you " need to remove" any of it. Maybe I've missed something?

    That's what I'm thinking too @Hostafan1.
It would look very unbalanced @Blues. Is there a problem with it in some way? We can't see the whole tree - do you have a pic of the whole thing?
