Can my avocado be saved?

This is possibly the sorriest excuse for an avocado tree you're ever going to see. The history is I germinated the seed in water, then potted it. It was so lustrous and healthy, doing really well. After a couple of months it was outgrowing its pot so I repotted it into the one you see in the picture, just in regular compost, as it had had before.

This is when the problems started. Firstly the leaves started to droop, then they started to dry and grow crusty. My first thought was over-watering. That still is my theory. So I started watering it less and gave it more sun. I got a good bit of new growth with some big healthy leaves, even though the previously affected ones were still getting worse and dropping off. When those new leaves also shrivelled I decided to dig it up and take a look under the bonnet. To be honest I was surprised that the soil underneath did not appear waterlogged or too dry and there was no sign of any mould. At this point I made a mixture of compost and sharp sand and repotted it back into the same pot. There had been another cluster of new leaves trying to open. These then also shrivelled and died before they got going.

So this is where we are. Now there are no leaves at all. My question is, do you all think that there is still hope for this little plant or am I best to call it quits? I don't want to give up on it because you can see loads of new little buds on the stem, so I think it's definitely alive. If I'm to continue does anyone know whether there is anything different I should be doing?

Many thanks,
Paul

What did the roots look like?
The new pot looks rather large for the plant.
What was the original pot size?
Don't give up though always worth waiting to see if the buds develop.
