We are thinking of putting in a Mountain Ash Tree. We have plenty of space, but wondered if it is okay to trim it annually or bi-annually to stop it getting too big and if so what time of year
I have a self-seeded one in my garden that's in the wrong place, but I love rowans. When it got to about 10ft I cut it down to 1ft. That sprouted and more shoots came from below ground. Now I have about 6 trunks between 5-15ft. high. This autumn I'll cut most of them down again and let it restart. So I don't think a trim will do any harm whatsoever - best time is when it's dormant - late autumn to late winter.

They rarely need any pruning, and you'll lose flowers /berries, but you could do it in autumn/winter when dormant, if you felt you really needed to.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
eg.
