Cut back overgrown crowded rhododendrons

We have quite a few rhododendrons around our garden and 2 next to the front door which are too big, leggy and crowding out other plants. Can I cut them right back after flowering and will they grow again and flower next year?

Without a pic, it's hard to give advice, but a better way of doing it, is to take out some stems completely - right back to the main trunk. That will keep them 'slimmer'.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
