Moving Olive tree into a pot

ConbrueConbrue Posts: 6
Hi,

I have an Olive tree in my garden but don’t want it getting too big, seems to be doing well over the last year or so. What’s the best way of moving it to a pot please? I want to keep it smallish, it’s about 4ft tall at present.

how big a pot is required please?

Thanks.

You can keep olives quite easily in pots and they do move quite well also. I would wait until the autumn as you want it to be shutting down its growth when you move it.
They are easy to prune though and you can keep them small like this. You will see some gnarly trunks of mature specimens where the plant isn't very tall because they have been kept this way. Our next door neighbour has a house in the med with 800 year old olives which get pruned by chainsaws, they really are hardy.

A lot depends on the size of the rootball,  though you could trim the thicker roots as you are effectively going to Bonsall it! It will want to be in a decent sized glazed pot, with a soil based compost JI3 , or your own garden soil mixed with some compost or leaf mould if you have any.

The size of the canopy will give you a good idea as to the size of the rootball and therefore what size pot you will need.

Hi, I looked into buying an olive tree direct from a grower and their quote for a 6 foot tree was a minimum pot diameter of 50cm. Hope that helps.
