Black Bamboo

Hi all,

I hope you are keeping safe and well.

I am new to this forum and gardening in general so I was hoping for some advice whilst I gear up to start getting some green fingers!

We have just moved in to a new home which has black bamboo on either side of the garden.

We actually quite like it and don't really have any issue with it except for the height. Can someone please advise of the safest way we can cut down the height without damanging the plant?

I've read various things about topping the plant meaning that it won't ever grow vertically again - is this true? If so, will it continue growing so then it becomes "bushier"? This is something I would like to avoid - we just want it to be a nice height and not overgrown.

Any advice and tips would be really helpful.

Please do keep in mind that I'm a total novice so will need everything broken down for me

Thanks in advance!

Each bamboo "stem" only grows vertically for one season. Once it get to its height , that's it. It won't get taller the following year.
You can remove stems completely or take out the tops of the tallest .

@Hostafan1 Thanks. I guess there's no way to find out how tall they will grow? I've ordered a pair of pruning scissors so will try to take out the tallest stems over the weekend.

I found a good video on YouTube which I'll try to follow!
