We have a large family of magpies nesting nearby, and have had several pots of plants vandalised by them.
What I have done is cut bamboo canes into 3 inch lengths, and buried them upto half their length. These have to be inserted at a distance of about one inch from the next.
No, it hasn't completely stopped the digging for bugs, but it has reduced the damage to various plants. I'll admit it looks rather strange, to see all these mini bamboo canes "growing" in my pots, but it works.
However, it hasn't stopped the squirrels from burying nuts there!! Any ideas?
Hi Rowland, Did the bamboo 'fence ' work ? A pair of magpies have completely vandalised one of our half-barrels of cyclamen, they have now demolished the replacement primroses. They were't put off by metal spikes ( wire cut into short lengths) . Any suggestions gratefully received!
