What's wrong with my Clematis?

I have an etoile violette which has been perfectly happy for 2 years. Great growth so far this season and tonight I noticed that some leaves  near the bottom are turning dark brown/black.  Is it wilt??  Or something else.  I'm having no luck searching online really.

I can't see anything wrong with stems or drooping further up the plant.

Not sure what to do! It's my favourite plant 🙁

  • No one? Does no-one know if this is wilt? Or just lack of nutrients of some kind?

    It isn't wilt  :)
Bit of weather or general damage. No plant is perfect 24 hours a day, all year round  :)

One of mine is just the same, never did find out what causes it. As Fairygirl says, no plant is perfect all the time.

Make sure it isn't short of water.

I get this on two of my clematis every year. It does not seem to damage the plant overall. They flower and come back every year. I don't know what it is either. I don't like to spray but I've tried anti fungus, rust etc to no avail. I've fed them with liquid seaweed in case they are missing a mineral. Still makes no difference. I would be interested to know too. Seems to affect the larger flowered ones and not Montana's, viticella or Armandii.
  • Too much nitrogen, I think.  Definitely not wilt. Have you been feeding it ?
  • Yes we did give it a feed of blood, fish and bone about 3 weeks ago. So maybe that then!! Thanks for the replies. Just relieved it's not wilt.

Wouldn't have thought that would have been any problem, unless you've given them tons!
Mine get a little B,F&B in spring, if I remember.  ;)
