Doesn't look like a leek to me...

Can anyone tell me what these spindly things are? They come from a packet of leek seeds but look nothing like any leek I've ever seen. Not a huge amount of experience though...

Not a leek.  Leeks have black nobbly seeds and a single hair like leaf to start with.  They look like weeds coming out of the compost.  Was it fresh leek seed?

  • They were from a packet I bought last year, but definitely looked like leek seeds. Have sowed from another newer packet and those ones look fine, the seeds looked the same. Pretty sure they are the seeds I planted that are sprouting but what they are is a mystery! I agree, definitely not leeks :)

Probably weed seeds that were in the compost, or blown in.  Lots of weeds produce airborn seeds, like dandelions.

Most allium family (Onions and leeks) need fresh seed to germinate.
  • Yeah last time I try using old seeds. What makes me think it's the actual seeds I planted that are sprouting and not weeds is that they're all the same and one in each pot.
