A combination of drying out and getting some caterpillar damage? It's also too deeply potted, if you're not in the South East the best you could do is plant it in the ground so it can have access to more consistent moisture and nutrients.
I am in SE....sorry am very new to gardening...what do you mean by deeply potted?...i repotted last year as pot it came in was tiny and there was no drainage...put in bigger pot as i wanted it to grow bigger...i was also watering alot, which ive now read isnt great..but i havent seen any of those white caterpiller things..thanks for your reply..really appreciate your help
I think amancalledgeorge meant you have re-potted into the new pot too low down. You should ensure the soil level is higher up to the top of your pot. Best way is to tap the shrub out of the pot, and put more soil into the base of the pot and then re-plant in so it is in a more raised position. Ensure it is a loam-based compost like John Innes No 3 with added compost or grit so there is a bit of drainage.
It's a very mature shrub even though it may not look it. The plant needs a lot of watering to sustain all that height. In the warm weather like now, you should water them generously ensuring water is pouring out of the holes at the base. You will need to do this 3-4 times a week in the summer time.
Thank you so much for your help..i will do this straight away...have looked online and all it states is it could be rotting from too much water, so stop watering...so im so glad you have helped me with this, as i definately would have killed it with thirst otherwise. Many thanks 🤗
It also looks as if the branches are tied together to force them into a tight cone. That's not good for the plant because it doesn't let air circulate and makes it more prone to fungal diseases like. I think growers do it to get saleable large cone shapes in much less time than it takes to create them by training and clipping.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
