Helpful ideas

Hi, Sorry for sideways image. I am looking for plant ideas to fill the void at the back of my garden where we have recently dug out some dead trees. The soil isn't great and there are a lot of tree roots close to the surface. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks :)

I'd get rid of the Leylandii for starters, they already look out of control and will become monsters in no time at all. They have been robbing your existing plants of moisture and nutrients and that is probably why your trees died. There is nothing much I'm afraid that will grow well in that spot with kind of competition. What you could do though is perhaps put some bark mulch down and turn it into a shady sitting area with nice loungers or table and chairs.

  • Hi, Thanks for your comments. Trouble is that is just a small section of the garden. The leylandii surround the garden to block out the school and school fields which are behind our garden. The trees do get pruned back once a year but I do appreciate your comments on nothing much will grow successfully. Maybe another seating area is the only way to go.

    I'd plant with lavenders......
  • Thank you to Treeface and Mary370. I don’t mind giving it a good dig over and chop out conifer roots if it means I can have a colourful planted area with some lavender mixed in . Your suggestions are really appreciated.

Just a note re above suggestion of Spanish bluebells ... The invasiveness of Spanish Bluebells also refers to the fact that they hybridise with the native English bluebells and are having a serious deleterious effect on native English Bluebell woodlands where this has happened.
