    You could try some, modest, low growing annuals in between - nemesia, diascia, marigolds, calendula...

    You wouldn't believe how exciting it was putting it down and suddenly these little plants pop!! 

    @Fire I'll take a look at some options, would be nice to get some colour. I sowed some calendula and zinnia seeds in the cold frame about a week ago but i may have been a bit late with them. Might see if i can pick up some cheap bedding plants at Aldi tomorrow.
