Pruning red robins

Hi I’m really getting into my garden this year and have these beautiful red robins but they are rather woody at the base, it is possible at some point this year to prune them back so they are encouraged to fill the space at the base more?

if so when? and how far back can I go?

Thanks!

Mine responded very well to being savagely chopped last April, my fiancé is not a gardener and I unwisely allowed him to “ tidy it up a bit” to my amazement it not only survived but has a lot of new red foliage! They are obviously tough as old boots!

I reduced mine from a huge “tree” with lots of bare branches to a four foot high shrub. I keep it well-watered ( this helps with the leaf drop problem, to which they are prone). I did this in April 2019 and now have a beautiful shrub with bright red, shiny leaves. Once the colour fades I will give it a haircut and it will produce more lovely leaves. If you keep it under control, you’ll love it!
