Newly Planted Rootball Cherry Laurel

Just over five weeks ago I planted a row of rootball cherry laurels.

I am getting an issue with some of the existing leaves yellowing and some of the new leaves that are coming through seem to be going brown. I am watering daily and have dug down in the soil and it seems moist. Also some of the branches have gone black at the end. I trimmed a lot of these back the weekend before last and I’m getting a few again.

I’ve read that I could be over watering or under watering which is confusing. When the laurels were delivered to me they were bone dry. Could this also be part of the issue or is what I am seeing to be expected on recently planted laurels whilst the roots establish?

I would appreciate some advise.

They look fine. All of the above is normal, especially when there was some lower temps - new growth gets frosted/damaged.
One thing I would do is to make the border wider - take some grass away. It's just competition for moisture/nutrients. They're very close to that fence, but it's too late to do anything about that.
If you can mulch round the laurels that will help too.  :)

There's a huge thread here about laurels - with everything you need to know. I'll find it and post the link

It's also worth taking a bit off them. They'll get bushier more quickly
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Thanks for the quick response. I’d though about taking away some of the border. How much would you recommend? The rootballs aren’t as close to the fence as the pictures suggest to be honest.

I'd take as much as you can, but it depends how much grass you want to keep. Laurels will spread several feet in every direction, given the chance  :)

A couple of feet anyway, if you can.

Thanks. I’ve just measured how far they are from the fence and it is over 2 feet
which I think I researched for planting.
