normal to shed some old leaves, but it is also a sign of being too dry

Very succeptible to being too dry as was said. A nightmare to grow in my opinion. Think of it like a rainforest plant, well they love rain and sun.

I have a black stemmed bamboo and two 'normal' ones. Black stemmed is FAR more temperamental than the others. In particular it dries out very easily in strong winds. Just moved mine so it's a bit more sheltered. It's still only now starting to recover from winter. Put out some new shoots a week or two ago so it's happy enough but nowhere near as vigorous as the other (far cheaper) ones. Lovely looking plant when it's at its best though.
