  I would try the bark test, just gently run your fingernail along the bark near the base. If it's green, there's still hope, if brown l suspect it's probably had it.

  One of mine went like that one year. I assume it was a load of Nasturtium I planted at the base had taken all the nutrients. Anyway it looked dead but perked up the following spring when I didn't plant anything at the base.

  When did you prune it? Looks like it's been pruned too hard and new growth pruned too? Give it a good feed and water well and keep your fingers crossed.

  They're edge of woodland plants, and they do like a lot of moisture.
  It may not be in the best site, and all the dry weather has affected it negatively - with the result that it's struggling.
  Copious watering should help, but it would also help if it has a prune back of anything that's obviously dead, and it may come away again. Your new growth has possibly had a bit of scorching - it looks like a sunny site it's in,and many areas have had really high temps.
  If you have any bark or even just compost, you can add that after watering too . Leaf mould is also good, but if you don't have any, some decent compost will do. 

  It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  @AnniD, yes it is green, so some hope. @foxwales, stupidly enough pruned bit too hard, regularly watering and feeding so keeping fingers crossed. @dave125, nothing new that I have planted which compete for nutrition but I confess that I did not fed for long time until last week. Wait and see. @Fairygirl, cleaned a dead bits, compost around base and regularly watering.  Thank you all for advice and guidance.
