Scruffy and dead clematis
Is it safe to prune out lifeless, scruffy looking stems of a clematis which is spilling over a wall into my garden from a neighbour's (see photo). To me they look dead, but will they be alive further along, because it's a vigorous Montana and really impossible to trace where they go, and I wouldn't like the idea of killing half the plant.

It's how montanas grow. They're just starting flowering here. Shame not to enjoy them though.
