Raised Beds Filling

Hi,

We built the below raised beds this weekend and are now looking for suitably filling material and a good cost.

The bed is 7.2m x 0.9m x 0.4m. Probably only fill 0.35m ish. Volume 2.2m3.

I have lined the base of the fence to protect the base, i'm thinking if reinforcement would be required? But most of the weight will obviously be down into the ground.

After some reading the plan is for a layer of grit/ tones. 10-20mm sizes. 50-75mm high for drainage. Then top up the rest with topsoil and maybe some compost if i can get in cheap enough.

If anyone could provide recommendation and even estimate quantities that would be great help for a new garden novice gardener.

Bonus. If you zoom in on the bird feeder you can see our resident woodpecker.

My one caveat is the ownership of the fence?  I'll admit to not being a raised bed enthusiast, but I can't help feeling that, once up and running, you'll be faced with a damp, albeit fine, layer of material between fence and polythene that'll gradually rot the wooden fence?  If it's yours, up to you but, if it's the neighbour's, think again?

For some reason the OP has posted this twice... I made the same point as Nick - you need a back to the bed, albeit it can be less aesthically pleasing e.g. scaffold boards. Otherwise the fence will rot or bow outwards.

The layer is not enough along the fence. Definitely need another wall and have a whole box. Good job there. Looks neat and well set out.

I'm looking to build one myself in the next two week.  I've ordered the sleepers yesterday. Except I'm building mine on Concrete ground and against concrete block wall. (think i do the same as you with the waterproofing material layer). I'm thinking of breaking up the concrete slab or leave a gap under the base of the timber between the timber and concrete ground at 10mm if the slab is too thick.
