Virginia Creeper

Hi all.  Why does my Virginia Creeper grow profusely at the top but it's scarce at the bottom ( I want it to cover a fence for privacy). Do I need to cut it right back? Thanks in advance.

Is it growing on the shady side of the fence? If so it’s probably seeking more light.
  • Hi Helios. My garden is South facing, therefore this fence gets sun from it rising until about 3pm at the moment. Cheers

you can untangle them and spread them out horizontally to get more cover

  • Hostafan. All the growth is spread across the top, it's 5' below this that is the problem. Its very sparse.

you can cut it back hard, and let it start again. A bit harsh, but it'd work.

Agree with @Hostafan1 cut it back and then train it in as it regrows
