First Malva and Zinnia plants

Hi All,

This is the first time I've planted anything so was hoping you could kindly help me.

In the first pic, the tray on top are the Zinnia's (planted about 2 weeks ago), and the one below are the Malva's (planted about 1 week ago).

About 4 days ago I put the trays outside for about 5 hours, and since yesterday I have left them outside completely.

I'd like to know if they look okay. They seem to be growing. Are the Zinnias ready for a feed? If so what feed is recommended? Will this also be the same for the Malva's when they develop true leaves?

Any comments would be appreciated, so feel free to let me know anything else that is relevant that I have not asked.

I am a complete newbie so would really appreciate your help.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Ali they look to be coming on well, they won't need feeding for some time yet.  The next stage is moving them into bigger pots preferably with some multi purpose compost, this will provide enough nutrients for your seedlings. https://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/grow-plants/how-to-prick-out-seedlings/

Just keep a close eye on them at this stage, they can be quite vulnerable to being too dry or wet or hot or cold. And to slugs or birds attacking them.

I've grown malva zebrina myself this year for the first time,  I found it to be quite care free, it's probably a few weeks from flowering now. I haven't grown zinnia.

I grew Zebrina for the first time last year and loved it. So many flowers and no deadheading required.  They get to about 2 feet high and easily a foot wide, so give them plenty of space.  They will self-seed freely
  • I'm currently growing Zebrina, since they self seed, are they invasive as they self seed?

    Hi Astro,

    Many thanks for your reply.

Yes I'll keep a close eye on them.

I'm just wondering whether there would have been benefit to keeping them indoors for a few more weeks before taking them outside. I just thought they would benefit from the sunlight.

That's nice about your malva, I bought them as they were 75p 😃

Would you recommend I transfer the zinnias into bigger pots around about now?

    Thanks

    Thank you for your reply.

I'm glad to hear that as the garden is a mess and could do with filling up.

Not wildly invasive @bradleywood32   Although they have seeded themselves in inconvenient locations.  I could move them but they have a deep taproot, so best not to move them.  I am also growing some from seed, and they have been outdoors for weeks.
  • @m_ali1986 wilkos by any chance? That's where I got mine from

Yh they were frim Wilkos 😃

I got all of my seeds from there as I found them to be the cheapest.

Couldn't find any mint seeds though which was a shame.

Did you get any other seeds from there?
  • Got a pack of delphiniums, pansy and then the malva. Waiting till the sale start and the stock up for next year. I did get the small cloche for £10 though

The Delphinums look nice. How are they coming along?

Good shout about the sale, I might do the same 🖒
