Good morning all
Im a newcomer when it comes to gardening. I did try growing veg but failed. Never mind. We are wanting to completely overhaul our back garden and I really am flummoxed. Fine with interiors but not gardens. I like real statements and as it’s a 1930s house I feel it lends itself to that. Happy to get rid of the trampoline and maybe even the tiny pond where the ferns are. Bottom left is in preparation for a summerhouse.

  • I have already spent £100 on a few plants as I’ve got the front to do as well. I don’t want anything too high maintenance so have bought some phlox seeds to fill some gaps. Extremely good soil luckily. Interest all year would be nice

Rik 56 is SO right. Don't do anything until you have worked out what YOU want from your garden and how much time and effort you wish to invest. When he asked about the soil, he meant heavy or light, acid, neutral or alkaline, well drained, rather wet, boggy all winter. Is your garden very sunny or rather shady or a bit of both? Sunny in the morning/afternoon? Are you a flower person, when you say interest all year, or do you like structural planting? Do you like lush, fluffy plants or those rather stark, spiky types? There is a lot to think about before you take up your spade.
  • The neighbours have an identical one and we are lucky to have fantastic neighbours all around us
  • Have you tried looking out of an upstairs window to get a better view of the garden's layout? Prioritise your needs first (play space, hanging washing, veg plot, must have grass, etc.) and then see how your wants fit with that list. Just because there is a patio near the house is it in the best place? Are there other places within the garden that catch the morning or evening sun, somewhere you would want to sit with friends for dinner or just a coffee and a book? Privacy would help but this could be done with planting.

Why did you have problems with veg. Does the garden face NSE or W, what type of soil.  A pond needs to be in a sunny position.  Your garden actually looks very nice.
