Leafminer on my mangetout

SkylarksSkylarks Posts: 379
I’ve just noticed some funny swirls on my mangetout leaves. Google tells me it’s leafminer.

Could someone confirm if the second photo is of a leafminer and eggs please?

Is it a case of checking regularly and removing?

Thanks

I’ve tried to zoom into the photo to make it bigger - it is quite blurry though. Anyone know if this is a leafminer adult and eggs please?

The damage definitely looks like leaf miner. Pretty common on pea growth of any kind. I get loads on my sweet peas. I just remove damaged leaves.
I can't see the last pic clearly enough, but it could be.

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thanks Fairygirl. I do vaguely recall seeing the pattern previously but never paid much attention to them. My plants are getting so much attention this year.

Leaf miners are almost gauranteed to appear on pea leaves but don't usually cause enough damage to affect the crop.  The adults are small black flies which insert eggs directly into the leaf tissue.  The complete lifecycle is only 2 weeks so all you can do is remove affected leaves or ignore it.  I think your latter photos are of something else, possibly aphids or even a natural leaf miner predator, such as tiny diglyphus species wasps.

Ah, ok thanks. Handy to know the life cycle. Wish I left that white fly thing now
