Please help my hedge is dying

I'm new to this site and by no means a

My problem is I planted a Portuguese laurel hedge back in October 2018. Some of the trees have taken no problem but others seem to be really struggling or even dying.
I have applied a bone meal fertiliser and I've also cut them back to try and encourage growth. Up until about 6 weeks ago I had a weed control membrane down coved with mulch but have removed this as I think it was keeping the soil to wet?
The soil is free draining and is of a good quality.
So I'm now at a loss for what to do, but unfortunately think it may be to late for some of the trees.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks James

What I would try now would be to scrape aside the bark mulch, give the soil a good soaking then replace the mulch. A gallon per plant is not excessive, but not just poured on all at once or it will just run off. If you go back and forth along the row, giving each plant a little at a time, it will soak in much better.
An efficient way to water, if the look of it doesn't offend you, is to save plastic bottles when they're empty. Discard the cap, cut about 2" off the bottom, and bury a bottle upside down beside each plant. Then you can pour water straight down to the roots, and you won't lose any by evaporation.
If it's no better in a couple of weeks, come back to us.
