Trying to ID this plant

Hi,

I just moved into a new property and I am just sorting through the garden.

I'm trying to find out what this plant/stalks are.   The long thin ones.

The rest of the garden is starting to spring into life, but I'm thinking these may be dead and need pulled out.  

Any ideas?

    I'd certainly pull out that Ash sapling, it'll be a tree in no time. 
    guess the thin stems might helianthus

    Thanks.   I was thinking they were some kind of sunflower or maybe a large poppy.

    They look really dry and dead.

    Looks like there's fresh new growth at the base. The old stems should just snap off cleanly .

    The dry sticks are last year's stems of a perennial of some sort. Cut them back or pull off. There should be new leaves growing from the ground - probably the dark green oval shaped ones in the bottom of your pic.
    Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
