Small Garden Design Ideas

Hello,
Complete novice when it comes to gardening and looking for some ideas on how to tidy up and modernise the garden. We moved here 3 years ago and so far managed to get rid of some bushes at the back, built a deck and painted brickwork.
Planning to paint the shed but not sure what to do with the mess on the left.
We are not avid gardeners (evidently!) so want to keep it low maintenance and simple.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!
Many thanks in advance.

I'm sorry, but "the mess on the left" is almost the only interesting part of your "garden".  Tidy, modern, simple doesn't have to mean flat and boring. You can't modernise plants, but you can use them in different ways.
If you could post some closer pics of your shrubs people on here will be able to identify them for you and tell you how to care for them, maybe suggest other suitable ones. Most shrubs only need attention once a year, so not a lot of work required.

It's an attractive little garden as it is. Getting a cohesive colour to the deck, shed and brick wall paintwork would instantly improve it. (The grey works OK). Are they conifers on the right? It's a pity about their 'bare bottoms'.

It largely depends what you use it for too.
You could lose the grass and have a 'division' across it, using trellis or similar with an array of plants. Many are easy to care for as @Buttercupdays says. That would also help to disguise those 'bare bottoms'  ;)
If you have the funds, you could do a rendered wall instead, with room in the top to plant up.
As @WillDB also says - picking a colour you like and repeating that throughout will also help. Hard landscaping colours and types should be kept to a minimum - go big with pots too, to make a statement or feature, and again - link the colour into them.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
