Hello,

I have a (new to me) small back garden (terraced house) which has previously been kept as a rather patchy, muddy lawn.  I’d love to turn it into a patio with plants in between the slabs.  I’ve found lots of advice on what to grow in the cracks, but nothing specific on how best to lay the slabs in the first place for this kind of design. Very grateful for any advice and also suggestions on good slabs to use please!

try you tube for videos on slab laying.
EVERYTHING seems to be on you tube now.
As for good slabs, it's like good food or good cars. You pays your money and takes your pick. If they're "cheap" there's a reason for that.
You're ( presumably ) only planning on doing it once, so go for best you can afford.

Hi @clarelouisecallow -   in addition to @Hostafan1's advice, just make sure that what you choose for planting will suit the conditions too.
Small spaces often become muddy etc when grass, but it could also mean that it's shady, so certain plants won't thrive.
I'd agree that it's worth doing the prep well, as it will pay off in future  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
