I don't plant out anything that small at this time of year, unless there's perfect conditions for them. I tend to grow them on, possibly into a slightly bigger pot for a while, and then plant out. Lychnis are pretty tough though. It largely depends on the climate and conditions where you are though

Personally l would break up the rootball, repot it with some fresh compost (or whatever you have available) into a slightly larger pot, and wait until new roots show through the bottom of the pot. I've seen plants arrive in far worse condition that that, a bit of TLC and they should be fine
I've got an order of delphiniums due in the next day or two. They were ordered a few days after my first order, so it will be interesting to see how they arrive.
