Acer davidii tree lack of leaves

Hi guys!
I have an acer davidii tree about 12 years old.always lots of leaves,happy.not this year..compared to my other racers and trees it looks extremely sparse! .i didnt prune the dead branches out.i never normally do.there are a few.drought?I'm thinking of getting a clematis to grow through it.the rose next to it is wonderful so hopefully that will help a bit.anyone any ideas?or am I just noticing it as I'm at home?!! I would attach a photo but it says it's too big..I'm a bit rubbish with mobile camera phones😬
