I have a solid oak garden bench as a memorial to my mother and I can thoroughly recommend Sadolin. You just need to sand it lightly before treating, and it's water-based so brushes clean easily. And it lasts. I did mine when the bench was new and it's now three years old and still looks new. It was recommended by a carpenter who said that if I used any oils I'd have to be going over it every six months or so and was a bit of a faff if you didn't have time for all that.
OH has just painted our new wooden porch with Sadolin before the carpenter comes to install it. The carpenter recommended it so I'm glad you are pleased with it @SueG1
